Obituary for Thomas Lee Carter

Thomas Lee Carter, age 77, passed away on September 20, 2018 after a long and valiant battle with lung cancer. Thomas is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley Joann Carter, his son Jeffrey Thomas Carter (Patty), his daughter Cindra Lyn Ross (Stephen), and his 5 grandchildren, Ryan, Jason, Sarah, Katie, and Jacob.

Tom was born in San Diego, California in 1941. His parents returned to Missouri, while Tom was very young, and Tom was raised and educated in the Osceola, Missouri area. Tom played trombone in the school band and worked in his father’s various businesses throughout his childhood. Tom attended Central Missouri State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics. He met Shirley Davis in the fall of 1961 in Kansas City. They married in June of 1962 and lived in the greater Kansas City area for the next 6 years and had two children, Jeff (1964) and Cindy (1967). Tom’s job with Aetna Insurance Company took the family to Wichita, Kansas in 1968, and then to Arcadia, California in 1971. Jeff and Cindy were raised and educated in Arcadia, both graduating from Arcadia High School where the family spent many years enjoying their participation in the Arcadia High School State Championship Marching Band. Jeff and Cindy both attended college in California, Jeff at UCSD, and Cindy at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Tom and Shirley moved to Danville, CA in 1986 when Tom took the helm at the Asbestos Claims Facility in Pleasanton, CA. After 3 years in the bay area, they moved to Yorba Linda, California in 1989, when Tom accepted a position with The Home Insurance Company. They bought a Travel Agency in 1996 which they ran for several years, and Tom also continued his work as an Insurance Consultant and Expert Witness. In 2000, Tom and Shirley retired and moved to Murrieta, California to enjoy golfing at Bear Creek, travelling around the world, and visiting with family and friends.

Tom Carter was an adventurer. He loved to try new things. He and Shirley participated in a Gourmet Group in Arcadia who learned to cook and try new foods from around the world. He loved to travel, and did not care if it was tent camping in Sequoia National Park, staying at a Five Star Hotel in Europe, Cruising in Alaska, Asia, the Caribbean or the Panama Canal, or just visiting the homes of his children and grandchildren. He and Shirley loved to just get out and take a drive, to see new places, and to try new restaurants. He loved to go to plays, and concerts, and sporting events. For years, Tom and his Dad had a standing two dollar bet on a number of sporting events. He continued this tradition by betting a chocolate shake on many games with his grandson, Jake. Tom was extremely proud of his family. He loved watching the paths of his children and grandchildren, and participating in their activities and adventures.

Thomas Lee Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Oppie Lee Carter, Leila Irene McCall-Carter, and his brother Michael E. Carter. He requested cremation and will have his ashes divided and placed at his family’s Cemetery in Roscoe, Missouri, spread by his Grandchildren at a golf course over-looking the Pacific Ocean, and some stored to be combined with his wife’s Shirley’s ashes at some point in the future.
