Obituary for Marilyn Eileen Nicholls

Marilyn Eileen Nicholls
Marilyn Eileen Nicholls passed away on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at her home in Murrieta, CA. She is
survived by her brothers, Robert, Donald, and Edward Caulfield, and her sisters, Elizabeth Felter, and
Margaret Copeland; her son, Ed Nicholls, Jr. and daughters, Theresa Jones and Cathie Duran, and her
nine grand-children, and one great grand-daughter. She was preceded by her loving husband of 56
years, Ed Nicholls Sr. Marilyn, or Lynn, as her many friends knew her by, was born in Rahway, New Jersey on April 27, 1932.

Marilyn was raised in a loving and tight knit family by her parents, Thomas and Elizabeth Caulfield, that
included 10 children. As the oldest daughter, with two older and two younger brothers, she was
immersed in sports and other activities. Being the oldest daughter also meant helping the family raise
her seven younger siblings. After graduating from Catholic High School in 1950 she worked at the phone
company until she was hired in the airline industry. In December of 1955, while working as a Stewardess
for Eastern Airlines, and while on a layover in Miami, Lynn met the great love of her life, her husband Ed.
They were married on October 6, 1956 in New Jersey, and honeymooned in Niagara Falls, New York.
They began their life together and started a family. They moved to Southern California in early 1960 and
settled in Fullerton, CA, where Marilyn was a homemaker and worked part-time for almost 30 years at
the Sears-Roebuck store in Buena Park, Ca, working mostly in the now defunct catalog pick-up section.
Lynn and Ed raised three children, Ed Jr., Theresa, and Cathie. Lynn, Ed, and their family were active
members of St. Phillip Benizi Catholic Church. Along with Ed, she was active in the Knights of Columbus
Council #3526 located in Buena Park. Lynn exercised her faith by attending church weekly, serving as a
greeter, and regularly praying for everyone she knew. She was a team mom for her children’s sports
teams and helped them in scouting activities. Lynn and Ed took the family on many outdoor camping
trips, first in an old canvas tent, and then in a variety of travel trailers. They saw many great places and
shared many exciting stories. In 1989, Lynn and Ed, having recently retired to the City of Murrieta,
began to enjoy a life of golfing and participating in many group activities. They loved to travel,
continuing to travel in their trailer and also taking many cruises. Lynn also participated in many
activities including the Red Hatters and Retire Stewardess Clubs. Lynn and Ed loved being considered
“founders” in the Colony Retirement community they lived in for over 29 years.
Lynn touched so many lives that is impossible to count, she was an outstanding wife and partner in life
to her husband Ed, who she adored, a great mother to her kids, a fabulous grandma to her grand and
great-grand kids and a great friend to everyone she ever met. She was the “rock” to her family, always
being a steady influence of love and thoughtfulness in her siblings and children’s lives. She worked hard
every day and she constantly helped others. She lived a life of faith, hope, and quiet leadership. She may
be gone, but she will never be forgotten. Mom, we will miss you every day, think of you often, and try to
live by your great example as we anxiously wait to see you again soon!

A Funeral Service and Mass will be held on Monday morning, May 7th, 2018 at Saint Martha’s Catholic
Church in Murrieta at 10:00am. Marilyn will be laid to rest, being reunited with the love of her life, Ed at
The Riverside National Cemetery, Riverside, CA. She is dancing with Dad in heaven as we speak!
